Treatment of Residues from Air Pollution Control Systems
نویسندگان
چکیده
The residues from air pollution control systems on waste incinerators are typically deemed to be a hazardous material due the potential for leaching of trace metals and salts. As a result, in many countries these residues require special handling, treatment and/or disposal. An innovative technology has been developed to recover useful by-products from these residues and render the remaining residue non-hazardous, thereby eliminating the long-term environmental liability associated with disposing of these materials. The primary by-products of the patent pending APEX Treatment System include, a non-hazardous calcium enriched solid suitable for construction applications, a highly concentrated lead residue suitable for recycling to smelters and a commercial grade calcium chloride solution. This paper focuses on the results from a large scale demonstration project.

Plasma treatment of air pollution control residues.
Air pollution control (APC) residues from waste incineration have been blended with silica and alumina and the mix melted using DC plasma arc technology. The chemical composition of the fully amorphous homogeneous glass formed has been determined. Waste acceptance criteria compliance leach testing demonstrates that the APC residue derived glass releases only trace levels of heavy metals (Pb (<0...

Background and aims: Air pollution reduction is important in health being of people and environment. Applying of an effective and efficient strategy is key consideration in facing with environmental challenges of management and control of air pollution. Recently, the main effort of environmental researchers is finding low cost and effective methods to control of environmental pollutants. Po...
متن کاملEconomic Evaluation of Zinc Recovery from Air Pollution Control Residues of European Waste to Energy Plants
SUMMARY: In Europe almost 80 million tons of waste are annually combusted in Waste-to-Energy plants. Solid residues generated thereby contain altogether about 69,000 t/a of Zn, of which more than 50 % accumulates in air pollution control (APC) residues. Recent research activities aiming at Zn recovery from APC residues resulted in a large scale Zn recovery plant at a Swiss waste incinerator. By...
متن کاملInfluence of Air SO2 Pollution on Antioxidant Systems of Alfalfa Inoculated with Rhizobium.
Air pollution is the most important environmental problem of last century that threatens the health of living organisms, especially plants. SO2 is one of the main air pollutants that can cause to imbalance in growth and physiological function of plant in high concentrations. Symbiosis of Rhizobium bacteria with alfalfa can cause increasing plant growth and plant resistance to abiotic stresses. ...
متن کاملAir Pollution Monitoring Changes to Accompany the Transition from a Control to a Systems Focus
During the 20th century, air pollution control technologies grew at an amazingly rapid rate. Air quality in much of the industrialized world greatly improved as the efficiencies of these technologies improved. This continued improvement in pollution control has more recently been complemented with measures to prevent the emission of air pollutants. The previous, exclusive focus on treatment req...
